Things worth knowing about "Chlorine dioxide"

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a chemical disinfectant used in water treatment. As a dietary supplement or remedy, it is dangerous and not approved by health authorities.

What is Chlorine Dioxide?

Chlorine dioxide (chemical formula: ClO2) is a yellowish-green gaseous molecule with strong oxidizing properties. It is primarily used in industrial water treatment, drinking water disinfection, and the food industry as an approved disinfectant. In the European Union, chlorine dioxide is permitted as a biocidal product and water treatment agent under strictly regulated conditions.

Areas of Application

Approved Industrial Uses

  • Drinking water disinfection: Water treatment plants use chlorine dioxide to reduce microbial contamination.
  • Food industry: For surface disinfection of equipment and packaging.
  • Paper industry: As a bleaching agent in pulp production.
  • Medical disinfection: In highly diluted form for surface and instrument disinfection.

Non-approved Uses

In recent years, chlorine dioxide has been marketed under names such as MMS (Miracle Mineral Supplement) or CDS (Chlorine Dioxide Solution) as a purported cure for numerous diseases. This use is not scientifically supported and has been explicitly classified as dangerous by authorities including the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mechanism of Action

Chlorine dioxide acts as a powerful oxidizing agent. It attacks and destroys cell membranes and protein structures of microorganisms. In water treatment, this property makes chlorine dioxide an effective disinfectant against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. However, when chlorine dioxide is ingested by humans, the same oxidizing effect attacks body cells, mucous membranes, and organs.

Health Risks and Toxicity

Ingesting chlorine dioxide as a drink or in the form of MMS/CDS is dangerous and can be life-threatening. The following harmful effects have been documented:

  • Severe irritation and chemical burns of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach
  • Nausea, vomiting, and severe diarrhea
  • Kidney damage and kidney failure
  • Dangerous drop in blood pressure (shock)
  • Breathing difficulties and lung damage upon inhalation
  • Life-threatening poisoning, especially in children

The BfR and EFSA explicitly warn against the oral intake of chlorine dioxide. In Germany and the EU, marketing it as a dietary supplement or remedy is illegal.

Legal Status in Germany and the EU

Chlorine dioxide is not approved as a drug, dietary supplement, or remedy in the EU. Selling or advertising chlorine dioxide for internal use in humans violates pharmaceutical law and food safety regulations. Authorities such as the BfR and the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) have issued corresponding warnings.

When to See a Doctor

If chlorine dioxide or products such as MMS have been accidentally ingested, emergency services (112) or a poison control center should be contacted immediately. Symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or breathing difficulties after contact with chlorine dioxide are medical emergencies.
