Things worth knowing about "Pregnancy test"

A pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG in urine or blood to confirm a pregnancy. Results are typically reliable from the first day of a missed period.

What is a Pregnancy Test?

A pregnancy test is a diagnostic method used to determine whether a person is pregnant. It works by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced by the developing embryo and placenta shortly after the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining. Tests are available for home use as well as in clinical settings.

Types of Pregnancy Tests

Urine Home Test

The most commonly used pregnancy test is the urine home test (home pregnancy test or HPT). It is available at pharmacies and drugstores and can be performed easily at home. A test strip or stick is held in the urine stream or dipped into a collected urine sample. Antibodies on the strip react with hCG in the urine and produce a visible result (a line, plus sign, or digital display).

Blood Test (Quantitative hCG Test)

The blood test is performed at a doctor's office or laboratory. It measures the exact concentration of hCG in the blood serum and can detect a pregnancy earlier than a urine test – as early as 6 to 10 days after fertilization. It also allows monitoring of hCG levels over time, which is clinically relevant when an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage is suspected.

When Should a Pregnancy Test Be Taken?

A home test provides reliable results from the first day of a missed period. Some highly sensitive tests may show positive results a few days before the expected period. For the most accurate result, it is recommended to use first morning urine, as it contains the highest concentration of hCG.

How Accurate is a Pregnancy Test?

Modern home tests have an accuracy of over 99% when used correctly. However, the following factors can affect the result:

  • False-negative result: Test taken too early, diluted urine (excessive fluid intake), or improper use.
  • False-positive result: Certain medications (e.g., hCG-containing fertility drugs), a recent miscarriage, or rare medical conditions that produce hCG.

How to Interpret the Result

A positive result (even a faint line) generally indicates pregnancy and should be confirmed by a blood test and ultrasound at a doctor's office. A negative result with a missed period should be repeated after a few days. If the period continues to be absent and results remain negative, a medical consultation is recommended.

What Happens After a Positive Test?

After a positive pregnancy test, it is important to contact a gynecologist promptly. The doctor can confirm the pregnancy, estimate gestational age, and initiate important early steps, such as recommending supplementation with folic acid and other essential nutrients.
