Things worth knowing about "Vojta"
Vojta therapy is a neurophysiological treatment method that activates innate movement patterns in infants, children, and adults with motor disorders through targeted pressure stimuli.
What is Vojta Therapy?
Vojta therapy, also referred to as the Vojta principle or Vojta method, is a neurophysiological treatment approach developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the Czech neurologist and pediatric neurologist Prof. Dr. Vaclav Vojta. The method is based on the concept that certain innate movement patterns are stored within the central nervous system (CNS) and can be activated through specific pressure stimuli applied to defined zones on the body.
The primary goal of the therapy is to reactivate blocked or disrupted movement sequences and to promote motor development. Two fundamental reflex patterns are used: reflex locomotion (reflex creeping) and reflex rolling.
Principles and Mechanism of Action
By applying manual pressure to specific trigger zones on the body – while the patient is positioned in a defined starting posture – coordinated movement responses are elicited in the brain and spinal cord. These movement reactions include:
- Activation of deep trunk and limb musculature
- Improvement of postural control and balance regulation
- Normalization of muscle tone
- Coordination of breathing, swallowing, and eye movement
The nervous system is trained to independently execute physiological movement sequences, leading to long-term improvement of motor function.
Indications and Areas of Application
Vojta therapy is used for a wide range of conditions and developmental disorders in both children and adults:
In Infants and Children
- Cerebral movement disorders (e.g., cerebral palsy)
- Developmental delays in motor skills
- Scoliosis and postural deficits
- Muscular diseases (myopathies)
- Infantile scoliosis and postural asymmetry (KISS syndrome)
- Hip dysplasia
- Neurological conditions following brain injury
In Adults
- Post-stroke rehabilitation
- Multiple sclerosis
- Spinal cord injuries
- Parkinson's disease
- Orthopedic conditions such as herniated discs or joint disorders
How the Therapy is Performed
Treatment is carried out by specially trained physiotherapists who have completed a certified Vojta training program. The therapist applies targeted pressure to defined trigger zones while the patient is placed in a specific starting position (e.g., lying on the back, stomach, or side).
A key component of Vojta therapy for infants is the active involvement of parents: they are instructed to perform the exercises at home several times per day. Individual therapy sessions are typically short – between 10 and 20 minutes – but are carried out regularly several times per week.
Responses During Treatment
During therapy, infants often display intense reactions such as crying. This is not a sign of pain, but rather a response to the unfamiliar and intensive musculoskeletal activation. When performed correctly by a trained therapist, the treatment is considered safe and well-tolerated.
Scientific Evidence
Numerous clinical studies and case reports support the effectiveness of Vojta therapy, particularly for infants with early motor disorders and in rehabilitation following neurological conditions. The method is internationally recognized and widely used in physiotherapy. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are desirable to strengthen the evidence base.
