Things worth knowing about "Subluxation"

What is a subluxation and why do our joints pop? Find out all about incomplete dislocations, causes and treatment options.

Subluxation - When the joint is (almost) out of alignment

A subluxation is an incomplete dislocation of a joint - this means that the bones that form the joint move against each other, but still remain partially in contact. In contrast to a complete luxation (dislocation), the joint remains in position but is unstable. Subluxations can be painful and significantly restrict the function of the affected joint. Shoulder, jaw and vertebral joints are particularly frequently affected.

The causes range from acute trauma (e.g. sports accidents) to recurring incorrect strain to muscular imbalances or connective tissue weaknesses. In manual medicine and chiropractic, the term is also used functionally - e.g. for blockages or minimal misalignments of the vertebral bodies, which can lead to restricted movement, pain or reflex muscle tension.

In this context, the question often arises: Why do joints actually crack? The typical "cracking" when a joint is adjusted or stretched is usually caused by the sudden drop in pressure in the synovial fluid. This causes gas bubbles to form, which collapse with an audible noise. The cracking is therefore not necessarily a sign of damage or subluxation - however, if there is repeated, painful cracking or a feeling of instability, medical clarification should be sought.

Typical characteristics of a subluxation:

  • Joint feels "not really on track"
  • Restriction of movement or "getting stuck" when moving
  • Localised pain or tension
  • Irritation of nerves or muscles in the area
  • Often accompanied by cracking or rubbing noises

Frequent causes:

  • Traumatic stress (e.g. during sport)
  • Muscular instability or imbalance
  • Poor posture, repeated microtrauma
  • Hypermobility or weak connective tissue
  • Compensation for spinal misalignments

Treatment options:

  • Manual therapy, osteopathy, chiropractic
  • Muscle development to stabilise the joint
  • Correction of posture and movement patterns
  • Supplementary: heat applications, acupressure, micronutrients
  • In case of repeated subluxation, diagnostic imaging if necessary
