Aurantiochytrium sp. refers to a genus of marine, single-celled microorganisms belonging to the class Thraustochytridae (order Thraustochytrida). Although they are sometimes colloquially referred to as microalgae, they are not true algae but rather heterotrophic protists classified within the Stramenopiles. They occur naturally in marine environments, particularly in coastal waters, mangrove ecosystems, and on decaying organic matter in the ocean.
Aurantiochytrium sp. is remarkable for its ability to synthesize large quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) — most notably docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid of great importance to human health. The biosynthesis of these fatty acids occurs via a specialized enzymatic pathway known as the polyketide synthase-like (PKS) pathway, which operates independently of the classical fatty acid synthase mechanism.
DHA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid that plays a central role in the development and function of the brain and the retina of the eye. Since the human body can only synthesize DHA in limited quantities, an adequate dietary intake is important. Aurantiochytrium sp. is industrially cultivated as a sustainable, plant-based source of DHA-rich algal oil — serving as a marine-derived but fish-free alternative to traditional fish oil.
Aurantiochytrium sp. is cultivated in controlled fermentation systems (bioreactors). By optimizing nutrient supply, temperature, pH, and oxygenation, high yields of both biomass and DHA can be achieved. The extracted oil is subsequently purified and processed for use in various food, supplement, and pharmaceutical applications.
Compared to fish oil, biotechnological production from Aurantiochytrium sp. offers several key advantages:
DHA-rich oil derived from Aurantiochytrium sp. has been evaluated and approved as safe by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food products and dietary supplements. Adverse effects at recommended intake levels are rare and may include mild gastrointestinal discomfort in isolated cases.
