Schizochytrium sp. refers to a group of single-celled marine microorganisms belonging to the class Thraustochytridae. These microalgae-like organisms are naturally found in tropical and subtropical ocean environments and are known for their remarkably high production of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Although Schizochytrium sp. is often referred to as a microalgae, it is taxonomically classified within the kingdom Stramenopiles.
The medical and nutritional value of Schizochytrium sp. is primarily based on its fatty acid content:
DHA has traditionally been obtained from fish oil, as fish themselves accumulate this fatty acid by consuming marine microorganisms such as Schizochytrium sp. Cultivating Schizochytrium sp. allows for the direct extraction of DHA, bypassing the need for fish. This is particularly relevant for:
DHA derived from Schizochytrium sp. provides the same health benefits as DHA from animal sources:
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends a daily DHA intake of 250 mg for adults to support normal heart function. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to consume an additional 100 to 200 mg of DHA per day. Dietary supplements based on Schizochytrium sp. are available in various dosages and are generally well tolerated.
Schizochytrium sp. is cultivated biotechnologically in controlled fermentation facilities. The resulting oil is used in a wide range of products:
Oil derived from Schizochytrium sp. has been classified as safe by both the EFSA and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under GRAS status (Generally Recognized as Safe). Adverse effects are rare; at very high doses, gastrointestinal issues such as nausea or diarrhea may occasionally occur. Theoretical interactions with blood-thinning medications (e.g., warfarin) at very high omega-3 doses are possible and should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
The health effects of DHA from Schizochytrium sp. are well supported by numerous clinical studies. The EFSA has confirmed authorized health claims for DHA, including support for normal brain function, visual function, and heart function. The bioavailability of DHA from Schizochytrium oil is comparable to that from fish oil.
