Calcium is an essential mineral stored primarily in bones and teeth. From the age of 50, bone metabolism shifts: the body breaks down more bone than it builds, raising the risk of osteoporosis (bone loss). Women after menopause are especially affected, as falling oestrogen levels accelerate bone resorption. Ensuring adequate calcium intake from age 50 onwards is therefore particularly important for long-term bone health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and most national health bodies recommend 1,000 mg of calcium per day for adults. Many international organisations, including the National Osteoporosis Foundation, recommend 1,200 mg per day for women over 51 and men over 70, given the accelerated bone loss in these groups. Total intake – from food and supplements combined – should generally not exceed 2,000–2,500 mg per day to avoid adverse effects.
The best way to meet daily calcium requirements is through a balanced diet. Rich dietary sources of calcium include:
Not all calcium consumed is absorbed by the body. Several factors influence the bioavailability of calcium:
Long-term calcium deficiency (hypocalcaemia) can lead to serious health problems. Common symptoms and consequences include:
When dietary calcium intake is insufficient, calcium supplements can be a useful option. Key points to consider:
There is ongoing scientific discussion about whether high-dose calcium supplements may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Current guidelines therefore recommend prioritising dietary sources of calcium and using supplements only when there is a demonstrated need and at moderate doses. Ensuring adequate vitamin K2 intake alongside calcium may help direct calcium into bones rather than soft tissue.
