What is PDRN?
PDRN, short for Polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a bioactive substance extracted from salmon sperm DNA. It consists of short DNA fragments and is used in medicine primarily to support tissue repair and wound healing. PDRN has found applications in dermatology, orthopedics, and ophthalmology.
Mechanism of Action
PDRN exerts its effects through two main mechanisms:
- Activation of Adenosine A2A Receptors: By binding to these receptors, PDRN triggers anti-inflammatory pathways and stimulates the production of growth factors essential for tissue repair, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF).
- Salvage Pathway: The DNA building blocks derived from PDRN are directly recycled by cells and used for the synthesis of new DNA molecules, thereby accelerating cell division and tissue regeneration.
Additionally, PDRN promotes collagen production and angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), improving wound healing and tissue nourishment.
Medical Applications
Wound Healing and Dermatology
In dermatology, PDRN is used to treat chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, burns, and skin injuries. It supports the regeneration of skin tissue and reduces scarring. In aesthetic medicine, PDRN is increasingly used for skin rejuvenation and the treatment of signs of skin aging.
Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
In orthopedics, PDRN is administered as an intra-articular injection for joint conditions such as osteoarthritis. Studies indicate that PDRN has anti-inflammatory effects, may promote cartilage regeneration, and helps reduce joint pain. It is also used in the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries.
Ophthalmology
In ophthalmology, PDRN is being investigated and used to promote corneal regeneration and to treat dry eye syndrome and other ocular injuries.
Dosage Forms and Administration
PDRN is available in various forms:
- Injectable solutions for intra-articular, intramuscular, or subcutaneous administration

Safety and Tolerability
PDRN is generally considered well tolerated. As it is derived from natural DNA, it is biocompatible and degraded by the body. Possible side effects from injections include:
