Restorative Yoga is a gentle, deeply relaxing style of yoga designed to support physical and mental recovery. Unlike more dynamic yoga styles such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga, Restorative Yoga emphasizes stillness, passivity, and the complete release of muscular tension. The practice traces its roots to American yoga teacher B.K.S. Iyengar and was later developed into its own distinct style by Judith Hanson Lasater.
A defining feature of Restorative Yoga is the use of props such as blankets, bolsters, cushions, blocks, and straps. These support the body so that poses can be held effortlessly and passively. A typical session includes only five to seven postures, each held for five to twenty minutes.
Restorative Yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system – the body's so-called rest-and-digest mode. This counteracts the fight-or-flight response triggered by the sympathetic nervous system during stress. The extended, supported holding of postures initiates several key physiological responses:

Restorative Yoga, by contrast, relies on full passive support and aims exclusively at recovery and relaxation – without deliberate stretching or physical challenge.
