The term reciprocal (from Latin reciprocus, meaning mutual or returning) refers in medicine and physiology to a mutual or opposing relationship between two structures, processes, or mechanisms. When two processes are reciprocally connected, they influence each other in a counterbalancing or opposing manner.
The term reciprocal is most commonly encountered in neurophysiology and muscle mechanics. The principle of reciprocal innervation (also known as the reciprocal inhibition principle or Sherrington's principle) describes how the activation of one muscle (the agonist) simultaneously causes inhibition of the opposing muscle (the antagonist).
This principle enables coordinated, efficient movement patterns and prevents opposing muscle groups from contracting at the same time.
Reciprocity also plays a central role in reflex theory. The reciprocal reflex (also called the reciprocal inhibition reflex) refers to the reflexive relaxation of a muscle when its corresponding agonist is activated. This process is controlled by neurons in the spinal cord and ensures automatic, unconscious coordination of the musculature.
In cardiology, reciprocal changes on an ECG refer to mirror-image ST-segment changes that appear in leads opposite to the area of myocardial infarction. These reciprocal changes can help clinicians localize the site of a heart attack.
In genetics, a reciprocal translocation describes the mutual exchange of chromosomal segments between two non-homologous chromosomes. Such changes can lead to genetically determined disorders.
In immunology, reciprocal regulation refers to situations where two cell populations or signaling pathways regulate each other in a counterbalancing way, for example between Th1 and Th2 helper cells, whose activities mutually inhibit one another.
Understanding reciprocal mechanisms is important across many medical disciplines:
