Yoga Nidra – often referred to as “yogic sleep” – is a systematic relaxation and meditation technique rooted in the ancient traditions of yoga and tantra. The term originates from Sanskrit: Yoga means “union” and Nidra means “sleep.” Unlike regular sleep, practitioners maintain a state of conscious awareness while the body enters deep relaxation.
In the 20th century, Yoga Nidra was significantly systematized and developed as a therapeutic method by the Indian yoga master Swami Satyananda Saraswati. Today, it is used worldwide in yoga studios as well as in clinical and therapeutic settings.
Yoga Nidra is typically practiced in a lying-down position (Shavasana). A teacher or audio recording guides practitioners through a structured sequence of consciousness-directing exercises. These generally include the following phases:
From a scientific perspective, Yoga Nidra guides the brain into a state corresponding to the transition between alpha and theta brainwaves. This hypnagogic state – the threshold between wakefulness and sleep – is particularly receptive to positive suggestions and deep regeneration. Studies show that regular practice can lower levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a state of calm and recovery.
Yoga Nidra is used both for prevention and as a supportive therapy for various conditions:
A Yoga Nidra session typically lasts between 20 and 45 minutes. No physical fitness or prior yoga experience is required. Practitioners lie comfortably on their backs, ideally with a blanket and pillow for maximum comfort. The technique can be practiced both in group settings and individually using audio recordings.
It is recommended to avoid practicing Yoga Nidra immediately after eating and to choose a quiet, warm environment to maximize its benefits. For noticeable results, experts recommend a regular practice of at least three times per week.
Yoga Nidra is generally considered very safe and well-tolerated. In certain conditions such as severe depression, psychosis, or acute dissociative disorders, the practice should only be carried out under the supervision of qualified therapists. For most people, however, Yoga Nidra is a low-risk, accessible tool for health promotion.
