The so-called weight loss injection is a colloquial term for drug injections with GLP-1 analogues, which were originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes
Preparations such as Liraglutide (Saxenda®) mimic the body's own hormone GLP-1 (Glucagon-like Peptide-1)<inhibits the feeling of hunger, the delays gastric emptying and thus leads to reduced calorie intake . This suppresses appetite, which can facilitate weight loss - even without a strict diet.
These drugs are now also explicitly approved for weight reduction in cases of severe obesity (BMI ≥ 30)
or in the case of BMI ≥ 27 with concomitant diseases such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes. The injection is usually given under the skin once a week. Studies have shown that many patients lose 10-15% of their initial weight - often more when combined with diet therapy and exercise.Despite its proven effectiveness, its use is not without risks: Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, constipationand vomiting. Rare but serious complications can include pancreatitis, gallstones or an effect on the thyroid gland. In addition, these medications are not approved for cosmetic purposes - their use should be medically indicated and supervised by a doctor. Experts warn against uncritical use in a trend context.
