Acteoside (also known as verbascoside) is a naturally occurring secondary plant metabolite belonging to the chemical class of phenylethanoid glycosides. It is found in a wide variety of medicinal plants, including Verbascum species (mullein), Plantago species (plantain), Olea europaea (olive tree), as well as Cistanche and Rehmannia species. Acteoside is among the most extensively studied phenylethanoid glycosides and is of growing interest in natural product research.
Acteoside consists of a hydroxytyrosol unit linked via a glucose moiety to rhamnose and a caffeic acid ester group. This structural combination accounts for its strong antioxidant activity. The compound is water-soluble and can be obtained from plant extracts or produced synthetically.
