Things worth knowing about "Baby skin"

Baby skin is more sensitive than adult skin and requires special care. It is thinner, loses moisture more quickly, and reacts more easily to irritants.

What is Baby Skin?

The skin of a baby differs significantly from that of an adult. It is considerably thinner, more sensitive, and not yet fully mature. The outermost protective layer – known as the hydrolipid film – is not yet fully developed in infants, making the skin more susceptible to dryness, irritation, and infection. During the first months of life, baby skin gradually adapts to the environment outside the womb.

Characteristics of Baby Skin

Baby skin has several notable features compared to adult skin:

  • Thinner stratum corneum: The outermost skin layer is much thinner in babies, making it less resistant to external influences.
  • Higher water loss: Baby skin loses more moisture through its surface (transepidermal water loss), which can lead to dryness.
  • More sensitive pH level: The skin pH of newborns is initially more neutral and gradually develops into a protective, slightly acidic environment over the first weeks of life.
  • Higher surface-to-body-weight ratio: Babies absorb substances through the skin proportionally faster than adults, which should be considered when choosing skincare products.

Common Skin Problems in Babies

Cradle Cap

Cradle cap (seborrhoeic dermatitis) is a harmless, scaly deposit on the scalp of infants. It is caused by excessive sebum production and usually disappears on its own.

Diaper Rash

Diaper rash (nappy rash) develops due to prolonged contact of the skin with moisture, urine, and stool. The affected skin becomes red, sore, and painful. Frequent diaper changes and protective creams help to treat this condition.

Neonatal Acne

Many newborns develop small pimples on the face during the first weeks of life – known as neonatal acne. It is a harmless condition that resolves without treatment.

Atopic Eczema

Atopic eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that often begins in infancy. It presents with dry, itchy, and red skin. Moisturizing skin care and, in severe cases, medical treatment are necessary.

Caring for Baby Skin

Proper care is essential for the health of baby skin. The following tips help parents with daily skincare:

  • Use mild, pH-neutral, and fragrance-free products specifically developed for babies.
  • Do not bathe babies too frequently or for too long – lukewarm water (approximately 37 degrees Celsius) and short bath times protect the skin.
  • After bathing, gently pat the skin dry (do not rub) and apply a moisturizing baby cream if needed.
  • Change diapers regularly and clean the diaper area with clean water at each change.
  • Prefer clothing made from soft natural materials (e.g., organic cotton) that does not irritate the skin.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for infants under six months. Toddlers should be protected with baby sunscreen (SPF 50+) and appropriate clothing.

When to See a Doctor?

Parents should seek medical advice if:

  • Skin changes are persistent, pronounced, or painful.
  • Signs of infection appear (pustules, weeping skin, fever).
  • The baby suffers from severe itching and disrupted sleep.
  • Rashes spread rapidly or do not respond to home care measures.
