Bikram Yoga is a structured style of Hatha Yoga developed in the 1970s by Bikram Choudhury. Each session lasts exactly 90 minutes and follows a fixed sequence of 26 postures (asanas) and 2 breathing exercises (pranayama). The defining characteristic is the environment: the room is heated to approximately 38 to 40 °C with a humidity of around 40%, which is why Bikram Yoga is also classified as a form of Hot Yoga.
Bikram Choudhury developed the method based on traditional Hatha Yoga techniques and the teachings of his mentor Bishnu Ghosh. The goal was to create a systematic and reproducible yoga practice that follows the same sequence in every session. From the 1980s onwards, the method spread globally and is now available in studios across Europe, North America, and Asia.
A Bikram Yoga class begins with a standing series of 12 postures, followed by a floor series of 14 additional asanas. Each posture is typically performed twice. Common poses include:
Bikram Yoga is associated with a range of potential health benefits. Early scientific studies suggest positive effects, though further research is needed:

Bikram Yoga is generally suited to healthy adults of all fitness levels. Beginners should start gradually, listen to their body, and stop if they feel unwell. It is advisable to attend the first class with an experienced, certified instructor. Anyone with pre-existing medical conditions should seek medical advice before starting.
While Bikram Yoga follows a strictly fixed sequence of 26 postures, other Hot Yoga styles offer more flexible or varied sequences. The term Hot Yoga is a broad umbrella term for all yoga practices conducted in heated rooms, encompassing styles such as Forrest Yoga and freely designed hot flow classes in addition to Bikram.
