What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease (also called Lyme borreliosis) is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia. It is one of the most common tick-borne diseases in Europe and North America. The condition is typically triggered by the bite of an infected hard tick (Ixodes ricinus in Europe, Ixodes scapularis in North America).

Is Lyme Disease Contagious?

One of the most common questions about this disease is: is Lyme disease contagious? The clear answer is: Lyme disease is not contagious from person to person. There is no evidence that the disease can be transmitted through coughing, sneezing, physical contact, or shared objects.

How is Lyme Disease Transmitted?

Borrelia bacteria are transmitted almost exclusively through the bite of an infected tick. Key points include:

Tick as vector: The tick picks up Borrelia by feeding on an infected animal (e.g., deer, mice) and can pass the bacteria on during a subsequent bite.
Transmission time: It generally takes 16 to 24 hours for bacteria to migrate from the tick into the wound. Removing ticks quickly significantly reduces the risk of infection.
Not all ticks are infected: Depending on the region, between 5% and 35% of ticks carry Borrelia bacteria.

Rare or Disputed Transmission Routes

In very rare cases, the following transmission routes have been discussed, but are not sufficiently supported by scientific evidence or are clinically negligible:

Transmission via blood transfusion (theoretically possible, practically extremely rare)
Possible transmission from mother to unborn child during pregnancy (congenital Lyme disease, very rare)
Sexual transmission is not scientifically proven

Symptoms of Lyme Disease

After a bite from an infected tick, the following symptoms may occur:

Erythema migrans: A typical expanding circular rash around the bite site, often described as a bull's-eye rash
Fatigue, fever, headache, and muscle or joint aches
In later stages: joint inflammation (Lyme arthritis), neurological problems (Lyme neuroborreliosis), and cardiac complications

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on a combination of:

Clinical findings (e.g., typical erythema migrans rash)
Blood tests for antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi (ELISA and immunoblot)
Detailed medical history (stay in tick-prone areas, known tick bite)

Treatment

Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics. The earlier treatment begins, the better the prognosis:

Early stage: Doxycycline or amoxicillin orally for 10 to 21 days
Late stage / neuroborreliosis: Intravenous antibiotics (e.g., ceftriaxone) for 14 to 28 days

Prevention

Since Lyme disease is not transmitted between people, prevention focuses on protection against tick bites:

Wear long clothing when spending time in forests or meadows
Use tick-repellent products (repellents)
Thoroughly check the body for ticks after outdoor activities
Remove ticks quickly and correctly (do not twist or crush them)
