The stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the oldest and most versatile medicinal plants in Europe.
Despite its defence-oriented exterior with stinging hairs, stinging nettle is rich in bioactive ingredients such as vitamin C,iron,potassium,calcium, silicon, flavonoids and secondary plant substances. Its effects have been known for centuries in folk medicine - in particular as blood-purifying, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and metabolism-stimulating.
.Stinging nettle leaves, roots and seeds are used in various forms:
as tea, fresh plant juice, extract, capsule or tincture. Nettle is particularly popular as a herbal remedy to support kidney function, for mild urinary tract complaints, spring cures or for rheumatic diseases. Its draining effect can help to eliminate excess fluid without removing electrolytes. In naturopathy, it is also regarded as a mineral-rich tonic that helps to strengthen hair, skin and nails
.The root of the stinging nettle is also used to treat prostate problems (benign prostatic hyperplasia) as it has mild anti-androgenic properties. Nettle extracts are also used to treat inflammatory joint complaints, such as osteoarthritis. In nutrition, it is used as a wild vegetable, soup or in smoothies - particularly valued for its iron content and its chlorophyll-rich structure. Skin irritation may occur in sensitive individuals; however, it is well tolerated internally.
