What is the DMSG?

The DMSG – Deutsche Multiple Sklerose Gesellschaft (German Multiple Sclerosis Society) is the largest and most prominent self-help and advocacy organization for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Germany. Founded in 1952, it is organized as a non-profit federal association with 16 regional branches and approximately 900 local groups. The DMSG represents the interests of people with MS in relation to policymakers, the scientific community, and society at large.

The DMSG pursues a broad range of goals focused on support, public education, and the promotion of MS research:

Counseling and Support: People with MS, their families, and caregivers receive free information, guidance, and practical assistance in managing the disease.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), affecting the brain and spinal cord. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheaths – the protective coverings of nerve fibers. This leads to inflammation, scar tissue (scleroses), and impaired transmission of nerve impulses. Approximately 280,000 people in Germany live with MS, while estimates suggest around 2.8 million people are affected worldwide.

MS Registry: The DMSG manages the German MS Registry, one of the largest MS databases in the world, contributing to improvements in healthcare research.

The DMSG and MS Research

A central concern of the DMSG is the promotion of MS research. Through the MS Research Promotion Association (Förderverein für MS-Forschung e. The German MS Registry provides valuable data for health services research and helps to improve the long-term quality of life for people with MS.
