Things worth knowing about "DMSG"

The DMSG (German Multiple Sclerosis Society) is the largest self-help organization for people with multiple sclerosis in Germany.

What is the DMSG?

The DMSG – Deutsche Multiple Sklerose Gesellschaft (German Multiple Sclerosis Society) is the largest and most prominent self-help and advocacy organization for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in Germany. Founded in 1952, it is organized as a non-profit federal association with 16 regional branches and approximately 900 local groups. The DMSG represents the interests of people with MS in relation to policymakers, the scientific community, and society at large.

Goals and Activities of the DMSG

The DMSG pursues a broad range of goals focused on support, public education, and the promotion of MS research:

  • Counseling and Support: People with MS, their families, and caregivers receive free information, guidance, and practical assistance in managing the disease.
  • Public Awareness: The DMSG informs the public about multiple sclerosis to reduce stigma and foster societal understanding.
  • Research Funding: The organization supports and finances scientific projects investigating the causes, disease courses, and treatment options for MS.
  • Advocacy: The DMSG advocates at the political level for the needs of people with MS, including healthcare access and social security.
  • Self-Help and Community: Through regional groups and events, the DMSG facilitates peer exchange and strengthens social networks among those affected.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS), affecting the brain and spinal cord. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheaths – the protective coverings of nerve fibers. This leads to inflammation, scar tissue (scleroses), and impaired transmission of nerve impulses. Approximately 280,000 people in Germany live with MS, while estimates suggest around 2.8 million people are affected worldwide.

Common Symptoms of MS

  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Visual disturbances (e.g., optic neuritis)
  • Tingling, numbness, or pain in the arms and legs
  • Difficulty walking and balance problems
  • Cognitive impairment (concentration and memory difficulties)
  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction
  • Spasticity and muscle weakness

Services and Offerings of the DMSG

The DMSG provides a wide range of support services for people with MS and those around them:

  • MS Helpline and Online Counseling: Free telephone and digital counseling services for people with MS and their families.
  • Information Materials: Brochures, guides, and digital content covering disease courses, therapies, and everyday life with MS.
  • MS Registry: The DMSG manages the German MS Registry, one of the largest MS databases in the world, contributing to improvements in healthcare research.
  • Rehabilitation and Sport: Guidance on specialized MS rehabilitation centers and physical activity programs for people with MS.
  • Local Groups: Community-based self-help groups encourage personal exchange and mutual support among those affected.

The DMSG and MS Research

A central concern of the DMSG is the promotion of MS research. Through the MS Research Promotion Association (Förderverein für MS-Forschung e. V.), scientific studies and projects are regularly funded. The German MS Registry provides valuable data for health services research and helps to improve the long-term quality of life for people with MS. The DMSG also collaborates with national and international research institutions and partners with the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) at a global level.

Membership and Volunteering

Anyone can become a member of the DMSG – whether they are directly affected by MS, a family member, a healthcare professional, or simply interested in the cause. Membership supports the work of the organization and provides access to exclusive information and events. Voluntary engagement plays a vital role at the DMSG, with thousands of volunteers active in local groups and projects throughout Germany.
