Eichenrinde ist ein traditionell verwendetes pflanzliches Arzneimittel mit hohem Gehalt an Gerbstoffen – insbesondere Gallotanninen und Ellagtanninen.
Gerbstoffe wirken adstringierend (zusammenziehend), entzündungshemmend, antibakteriell und unterstützen die Wundheilung. Genutzt wird die getrocknete Rinde junger Zweige der Stieleiche oder Traubeneiche.
In der Volksmedizin und Phytotherapie wird Eichenrinde traditionell äußerlich bei entzündlichen Hauterkrankungen, Ekzemen, Schweißfüßen, Hämorrhoiden und Mund- oder Rachenentzündungen eingesetzt – meist als Sitzbad, Umschlag, Spülung oder Gurgellösung. Innerlich wird sie selten verwendet, kann aber bei unspezifischem Durchfall aufgrund ihrer abdichtenden und sekretbindenden Wirkung auf die Darmschleimhaut hilfreich sein.
Die Anwendung sollte zeitlich begrenzt erfolgen, da ein Zuviel an Gerbstoffen die Schleimhäute reizen kann. In der modernen Naturheilkunde findet Eichenrinde auch Anwendung als Bestandteil kombinierter Präparate z. B. bei analem Juckreiz, Intertrigo, Windeldermatitis oder in der postoperativen Wundpflege.
