What Is a Parent-Child Cure?
The parent-child cure (German: Eltern-Kind-Kur) is a medically supervised preventive or rehabilitative stay offered in Germany, during which one parent – most often the mother, but increasingly also the father – attends a specialized clinic or health resort together with one or more children. The measure targets families who are struggling with chronic stress, physical illness, psychological exhaustion, or difficult life circumstances that affect the health and well-being of the entire family. The overarching goal is to restore and strengthen the physical, emotional, and social health of both the parent and the children.
Who Is Eligible?
Any parent with children can apply for a parent-child cure if there is a documented medical need. In Germany, statutory health insurance funds (gesetzliche Krankenkassen) cover the costs when certain eligibility criteria are met. Common reasons for application include:
- Chronic physical or mental illness of the applying parent
- Severe exhaustion caused by the demands of childcare and family responsibilities
- Risk of a breakdown of the family caregiving situation
- Health conditions or developmental delays in the accompanying children
- Special family burdens such as separation, bereavement, or disability of a family member
Children are generally eligible to participate up to the age of 12, and in exceptional cases up to the age of 18.
Structure and Content of the Program
A parent-child cure typically lasts three weeks and takes place in an accredited specialist clinic. The program is individually tailored to the needs of both the parent and the children, and commonly includes:
- Medical diagnostics and physician care for all participants
- Physiotherapy, massage, and physical treatments for physical recovery
- Psychological counseling and group therapy to address stress and emotional burdens
- Educational activities and therapeutic play for children
- Relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, or mindfulness
- Parenting courses and family counseling to strengthen parenting skills
- Health education covering nutrition, physical activity, and sleep hygiene
How to Apply
Applications for a parent-child cure are typically initiated through the family doctor or a specialist, who issues a medical certificate confirming the necessity of the measure. The application is then submitted to the relevant health insurance fund. The usual steps are:
- Obtain a medical certificate from the treating physician
- Submit the completed application forms to the health insurance fund
- Await approval (an appeal is possible if the application is initially rejected)
- Select an appropriate clinic in coordination with the insurance fund
- Travel to the clinic and complete the program
Support with the application process is available through organizations such as the Stiftung Müttergenesung, social welfare associations (AWO, Caritas, Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband), and specialized family counseling centers.
Costs and Patient Contributions
Statutory health insurers cover the majority of the costs for an approved parent-child cure. However, a legally defined co-payment may apply, which is calculated based on the income of the applicant. In cases of financial hardship, this co-payment can be waived entirely. Privately insured individuals should check their policy for coverage of preventive rehabilitation measures. Additional costs may arise from travel, optional services, or supplementary treatments.
