Erythrozyten, umgangssprachlich auch rote Blutkörperchen genannt, sind die häufigsten Zellen im menschlichen Blut und verantwortlich für den Transport von Sauerstoff und Kohlendioxid.
Die charakteristische bikonkave Form von Erythrozyten vergrößert die Oberfläche und ermöglicht einen effizienten Gasaustausch. Erythrozyten enthalten das Protein Hämoglobin, das Sauerstoff in der Lunge bindet und ihn zu den Körperzellen transportiert – gleichzeitig nimmt es Kohlendioxid auf, das über die Lunge abgeatmet wird. Gebildet werden Erythrozyten im roten Knochenmark durch den Prozess der Erythropoese, der durch das Hormon Erythropoetin (EPO) gesteuert wird – vor allem in Reaktion auf Sauerstoffmangel.
Reife Erythrozyten besitzen keinen Zellkern und leben etwa 120 Tage, bevor sie in der Milz, Leber oder im Knochenmark abgebaut und recycelt werden. Der Eisengehalt des Hämoglobins spielt hierbei eine zentrale Rolle: Ein Eisenmangel kann die Bildung von Erythrozyten stören und zu Anämie (Blutarmut) führen, was sich durch Symptome wie Müdigkeit, Blässe und verminderte Leistungsfähigkeit äußert. Medizinisch wichtige Parameter sind u. a. die Erythrozytenzahl, der Hämoglobinwert, der Hämatokrit, sowie Zellindices wie MCV, MCH und MCHC, die Aufschluss über die Größe und Hämoglobinkonzentration der roten Blutkörperchen geben. Diese Werte sind entscheidend für die Diagnose von Blutarmut, Entzündungen oder Knochenmarkerkrankungen. Zudem spielen Erythrozyten bei der Blutgruppenbestimmung und Transfusionsmedizin eine wesentliche Rolle, da sie die Blutgruppenantigene (AB0, Rhesus) tragen.
