Glykoproteine sind Proteine, an die Zuckermoleküle (Glykane) gebunden sind.
Die Kombination aus Eiweiß- und Zuckeranteilen kommt in nahezu allen Zellen und Körperflüssigkeiten vor und erfüllt eine Vielzahl biologischer Aufgaben. Die Zuckerketten beeinflussen die Faltung, Stabilität und Erkennung der Proteine. Sie wirken also wie molekulare „Etiketten“, die Informationen über die jeweilige Zelle oder Substanz übermitteln.
Glykoproteine spielen eine zentrale Rolle in der Zellkommunikation, der Immunabwehr und der Signalübertragung. Beispiele sind Immunglobuline (Antikörper), Hormone wie Erythropoetin oder Luteinisierendes Hormon sowie Oberflächenproteine von Viren. Auch die Blutgruppenmerkmale basieren auf glykosylierten Membranproteinen. Veränderungen in der Glykosylierung können mit Krankheiten wie Krebs, Autoimmunstörungen oder Infektionen in Verbindung stehen.
In der Medizin sind Glykoproteine wichtige Marker für Diagnostik und Therapie. Bestimmte Tumormarker, wie CA-125 oder PSA, basieren auf glykosylierten Proteinen. Auch in der Biotechnologie – etwa bei der Herstellung von Impfstoffen oder therapeutischen Antikörpern – ist die gezielte Glykosylierung ein entscheidender Faktor für Wirksamkeit und Verträglichkeit. Die Forschung an Glykoproteinen gewinnt daher zunehmend an Bedeutung für moderne Therapien.
