What Are Dark Circles Under the Eyes?
Dark circles under the eyes, also known medically as periorbital hyperpigmentation, refer to the appearance of dark, bluish, brownish, or reddish discoloration of the skin surrounding the eyes. This common cosmetic concern affects people of all ages and skin types and can give the face a tired or aged appearance.
Causes
Dark circles can result from a variety of causes, ranging from lifestyle factors to underlying medical conditions:
- Sleep deprivation: Lack of sleep is the most common cause. The skin becomes paler, making blood vessels beneath the thin under-eye skin more visible.
- Genetics: Some individuals naturally have thinner skin or higher melanin concentration in the periorbital area.
- Dehydration: Insufficient fluid intake causes the skin to look dull, emphasizing hollowness under the eyes.
- Allergies: Allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis trigger blood vessel dilation and itching, worsening the appearance of dark circles.
- Anemia: Iron deficiency or low red blood cell counts lead to pale skin, making dark circles more prominent.
- Aging: As skin loses collagen and subcutaneous fat over time, shadows and hollows form under the eyes.
- Hyperpigmentation: Excess melanin production, often triggered by sun exposure or hormonal changes, can permanently darken the skin around the eyes.
- Stress and fatigue: Chronic stress impairs blood circulation, contributing to a more pronounced periorbital shadow.
Symptoms and Appearance
Dark circles under the eyes typically present as:
- Dark bluish, brownish, or purplish discoloration beneath the eyes
- Puffiness or hollowness of the lower eyelid area
- Visible blood vessels through thin skin
- An overall tired or fatigued facial appearance
Diagnosis
In most cases, dark circles are diagnosed visually during a clinical examination. A healthcare provider may take a detailed medical history to rule out underlying conditions such as allergies or anemia. If a systemic cause is suspected, blood tests including a complete blood count, iron levels, or thyroid function tests may be recommended.
Treatment and Prevention
General Lifestyle Measures
- Getting adequate sleep (7 to 9 hours per night)
- Staying well hydrated (at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day)
- Managing stress through relaxation techniques
- Applying sunscreen around the eye area (SPF 30 or higher)
Cosmetic Treatments
- Eye creams containing active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, caffeine, or hyaluronic acid can help firm and brighten the skin.
- Cold compresses or chilled tea bags can reduce puffiness and constrict blood vessels.
- Concealer provides a quick cosmetic solution to mask dark circles.
