The hippocampus is a central part of the brain that plays an important role in memory formation, learning and spatial orientation.
The hippocampus is located in the medial temporal lobe and is part of the limbic system, which is associated with emotions and information processing. It is particularly important for the consolidation of short-term to long-term memories and for navigating the environment.
A healthy hippocampus is crucial for cognitive performance and emotional stability. In diseases such as Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, the hippocampus often shows early signs of damage, such as the loss of nerve cells, which is associated with memory loss and cognitive decline. Similarly, chronic stress and depression can impair hippocampal function, as these conditions are associated with increased cortisol levels, which can have neurotoxic effects.
A healthy lifestyle, regular mental activity and certain nutrients can support the function of the hippocampus. Spermidine, a bioactive polyamine that has neuroprotective properties and promotes cellular autophagy - a process in which damaged cellular components are broken down and recycled - also plays a role in this. Studies suggest that spermidine may help maintain the health of nerve cells in the hippocampus and counteract age-related cognitive decline. Spermidine-rich foods such as wheat germ or soya beans could therefore have a protective effect on the hippocampus and overall brain function.
The hippocampus is not only of central importance for our memory, but also for our general brain health. Measures that support this brain region, such as physical activity, stress management and a balanced diet, can help to maintain cognitive performance in the long term.
