What are heat-inactivated bacteria?
Heat-inactivated bacteria, also known as postbiotics or tyndallisates, are microorganisms that have been killed through a controlled heat treatment process. Although the bacterial cells are destroyed, their structural components – such as cell wall fragments, proteins, and DNA – remain intact and biologically active. Unlike living probiotics, heat-inactivated bacteria can no longer reproduce, but they can still exert beneficial effects on the immune system and gut health.
Production and Properties
Inactivation is achieved by heating to defined temperatures (typically between 60 and 121 °C), sometimes under pressure (autoclaving) or by gentler methods such as tyndallization. Key properties include:
- Stability: Heat-inactivated bacteria are more shelf-stable than living cultures and often do not require refrigeration.
- Safety: Since the bacteria are no longer alive, there is no risk of infection – particularly relevant for immunocompromised individuals.
- Reproducibility: Manufacturing processes are highly standardizable, enabling consistent product quality.
Mechanism of Action
Although heat-inactivated bacteria are not alive, their cellular components exert important biological effects in the human body:
- Immune modulation: Components of the bacterial cell wall, such as peptidoglycan, lipopolysaccharides, and teichoic acids, are recognized by immune cells and can regulate immune responses.
- Interaction with the gut microbiome: Heat-inactivated bacteria can influence the balance of the gut flora and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.
- Anti-inflammatory effects: Certain bacterial components can inhibit pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, thereby dampening inflammatory reactions.
- Gut barrier function: Some studies indicate that heat-inactivated bacteria can improve the integrity of the intestinal mucosa.

Heat-inactivated bacteria are used in various areas of medicine and nutritional supplementation:
Immune System and Respiratory Infections
Certain preparations containing heat-inactivated bacteria (e.g., based on Lactobacillus or Streptococcus strains) are used to support the immune system and prevent recurrent respiratory infections. Clinical studies suggest that such preparations can reduce the frequency and severity of colds.
Gut Health
In the field of gut health, heat-inactivated bacteria are discussed as postbiotics. They can help support the microbiome without the risks associated with living organisms – particularly relevant for immunocompromised patients or those recovering from antibiotic therapy.
Allergy and Atopic Conditions
There is evidence suggesting that heat-inactivated bacteria may help regulate excessive immune reactions. Studies have investigated their use in allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis, and hay fever.
Medical Vaccines and Immunotherapy
In medicine, killed bacteria have long been used as the basis for vaccines (e.g., inactivated vaccines), as they can trigger an immune response without causing infection.

Scientific Classification
The concept of postbiotics – which includes heat-inactivated bacteria – is an active area of research. The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) published an official definition for postbiotics in 2021. While initial clinical studies show promising results, the evidence base for many applications is still developing. A final assessment will require further large-scale clinical trials.
