Things worth knowing about "Hypnosis Therapy"

Hypnosis therapy is a psychotherapeutic method that uses a trance-like state of consciousness to treat mental and physical conditions in a targeted and evidence-based way.

What is Hypnosis Therapy?

Hypnosis therapy, also known as hypnotherapy, is a scientifically recognized psychotherapeutic method. Using guided language and relaxation techniques, the therapist leads the patient into a trance-like state. In this state, consciousness is altered but not switched off – the person remains aware and responsive at all times. The hypnotic state makes it easier to access deeper thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns, allowing them to be positively influenced.

Areas of Application

Hypnosis therapy is used for a wide range of psychological and physical conditions. The most common areas of application include:

  • Anxiety disorders and phobias
  • Chronic pain management
  • Smoking cessation and other addictive behaviors
  • Sleep disorders and insomnia
  • Stress reduction and burnout prevention
  • Depression and depressive episodes
  • Irritable bowel syndrome and psychosomatic complaints
  • Trauma processing and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Preparation for medical or dental procedures

How Does Hypnosis Therapy Work?

At the beginning of a session, the therapist guides the patient into a trance state using relaxation instructions and focused language. In this state, attention is strongly directed inward, and receptivity to therapeutic suggestions is heightened. These suggestions may aim to change behaviors, relieve symptoms, or help process distressing experiences.

Several forms of hypnotherapy exist:

  • Direct suggestion: Targeted influence on symptoms and behaviors through positive statements.
  • Analytical hypnosis: Uncovering unconscious conflicts and underlying causes of complaints.
  • Ego-state therapy: Working with different inner personality parts.
  • Self-hypnosis: Teaching techniques the patient can use independently.

Scientific Evidence and Recognition

Hypnosis therapy is recognized as a scientifically validated method by numerous international health organizations. Extensive clinical studies demonstrate its effectiveness for chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety disorders, and smoking cessation. The American Psychological Association (APA) and other international professional bodies acknowledge hypnotherapy as an evidence-based treatment approach.

Structure of a Hypnotherapy Session

A typical session lasts between 50 and 90 minutes. It begins with a detailed discussion of the goals and expectations. This is followed by the induction phase, in which the trance state is initiated. During the core therapeutic phase, the therapist works with targeted suggestions or imaginative techniques. Finally, the patient is gently guided back to the normal waking state and the experience is discussed.

Side Effects and Contraindications

Hypnosis therapy is considered very safe with few side effects. In rare cases, temporary fatigue, dizziness, or intense emotions may occur after a session. However, it is not suitable for individuals with:

  • Psychosis or acute schizophrenic episodes
  • Severe personality disorders
  • Epilepsy (without prior medical consultation)

A medical or psychotherapeutic evaluation should always take place before beginning hypnotherapy.
