Collagen hydrolysate is an enzymatically broken down form of collagen.which is particularly well bioavailable and can be efficiently incorporated by the body into skin, joints, bones and connective tissue. Collagen is the most common structural protein in the human body and ensures strength, elasticity and regeneration.
.
What is collagen and why is it important?
Collagen is essential for:
- Skin: Provides firmness, elasticity and moisture retention.
- Joints & cartilage: Supports mobility and protects against wear and tear.
- Bones: Promotes bone density and stability.
- Connective tissue, tendons & ligaments: Increases resistance and regeneration.
With increasing age, collagen production decreases, which can manifest itself in wrinkles, joint pain and weak connective tissue. Supplementing with collagen hydrolysate can help to slow down this natural breakdown.
Sources of collagen hydrolyzate
Collagen is obtained exclusively from animal sources. The three main sources are:
-
Bovine gelatine (bovine collagen hydrolysate)
- Obtained from bovine hide and bone
- Contains mainly type I & III collagen, important for skin, hair and connective tissue
-
Marine collagen (fish collagen)
- Made from fish skin and scales
- Especially high bioavailability
- Contains predominantly type I collagen, ideal for skin and anti-ageing
-
Vegan collagen? - A myth
- Vegan collagen does not exist, as collagen is only found in animal tissue
- Products that are marketed as ""vegan collagen"" only contain amino acids (e.g. glycine, proline, hydroxyproline), which can support the body's own collagen production
- Supportive plant-based nutrients such as vitamin C, zinc and silicon promote collagen synthesis, but do not replace real collagen
Health benefits of collagen hydrolyzate
- Skin elasticity & wrinkle reduction: Studies show that collagen hydrolysate improves skin texture and increases moisture.
- Joint protection & pain reduction: Collagen strengthens the cartilage and reduces discomfort in arthritis or sports injuries.
- Bone stability: Promotes the mineralisation of bones and can prevent osteoporosis.
- Muscle maintenance & regeneration: Supports muscle building, especially in combination with strength training. .
- Stronger hair & nails: Collagen is an important component of hair and nail structure.
Combination with other nutrients
Collagen production in the body is optimised by certain micronutrients:
- Vitamin C: Necessary for collagen formation.
- Hyaluronic acid: Supports skin hydration and joint lubrication.
- Zinc & silicon: Promotes the structure of skin and connective tissue.
