Magnesium Aluminosilicate is an inorganic mineral belonging to the group of layered silicates (phyllosilicates). It is composed of magnesium, aluminum, and silicon oxides and occurs naturally as a component of clay minerals. It is widely used as a functional excipient in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries. Within the European Union, related aluminosilicate compounds are approved as food additives, with aluminum silicate listed under E559 and magnesium silicate under E553.
Magnesium Aluminosilicate belongs to the smectite group, a family of swelling clay minerals with a characteristic layered structure. This structure provides a high specific surface area and notable swelling capacity in water, making it a versatile ingredient across multiple industries.
In the pharmaceutical industry, Magnesium Aluminosilicate is commonly used as an excipient in solid and semi-solid dosage forms. It serves several important functions:
As a food additive, Magnesium Aluminosilicate primarily functions as an anti-caking agent and separating agent. It prevents powdered food products such as table salt, spice blends, and dried food products from clumping together. Permitted maximum levels are regulated under EU Food Additives Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008.
In cosmetic formulations, Magnesium Aluminosilicate is used as a thickener, stabilizer, and suspending agent. It improves the texture of lotions, creams, and makeup products and ensures even distribution of pigments and active ingredients.
Magnesium Aluminosilicate is considered safe when used as intended. As the substance is practically not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract following oral intake, systemic exposure is minimal. However, the following points should be noted:
Magnesium Aluminosilicate has been assessed as safe by several international regulatory authorities. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) includes it in the list of substances Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated related aluminosilicate compounds in food and established acceptable daily intake values.
