Neurotransmitter sind chemische Botenstoffe des Nervensystems, die Informationen zwischen Nervenzellen (Neuronen) übertragen.
Neurotransmitter spielen eine zentrale Rolle für die Kommunikation im Gehirn, die Regulation von Stimmung, Gedächtnis, Schlaf, Bewegung und viele weitere Körperfunktionen. Ohne Neurotransmitter wäre eine gezielte Reizweiterleitung – etwa vom Sinnesorgan zum Gehirn oder vom Gehirn zum Muskel – nicht möglich.
Es wird zwischen verschiedenen Arten von Neurotransmittern mit jeweils spezifischer Wirkung unterschieden. Zu den bekanntesten zählen:
- Serotonin: beeinflusst Stimmung, Schlaf und Appetit
- Dopamin: wichtig für Motivation, Belohnung, Antrieb
- Acetylcholin: entscheidend für Lernen und Gedächtnis
- Noradrenalin: beteiligt an Wachheit und Stressantwort
- GABA (γ-Aminobuttersäure): wirkt beruhigend und angstlösend
- Glutamat: wichtigster erregender Neurotransmitter im Gehirn
Ein Ungleichgewicht dieser Botenstoffe kann zu psychischen Erkrankungen, neurologischen Störungen oder körperlichen Symptomen führen, etwa bei Depressionen, Angststörungen, ADHS, Schlafproblemen oder Morbus Parkinson. Ernährung, Bewegung, Stress, Medikamente (wie Antidepressiva) und Nahrungsergänzungsmittel können Einfluss auf den Neurotransmitterhaushalt nehmen.
