Omega-6 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential for many important bodily functions. Like omega-3, they belong to the so-called essential fatty acids, which means that the body cannot produce them itself and they must be obtained from food. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in vegetable oils such as sunflower, corn and soya oil as well as in nuts, seeds and meat products.
One of the most important omega-6 fatty acids is linoleic acid, which is converted in the body into other fatty acids such as arachidonic acid. These play a role in regulating inflammatory processes, cell growth and supporting cardiovascular health. Omega-6 fatty acids are therefore essential for health, but the right balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is crucial.
In the Western diet, large amounts of omega-6 fatty acids are often consumed, which can lead to an imbalance, as omega-6 fatty acids in higher quantities can have a pro-inflammatory effect. A balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (approximately 4:1) is therefore important to regulate inflammation in the body and prevent chronic conditions such as heart disease, arthritis and inflammatory conditions. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, flaxseed and algae oil, have an anti-inflammatory effect and should ideally be balanced with omega-6 fatty acids to support optimal health.
To summarise, omega-6 fatty acids are essential building blocks of the diet that support a variety of functions in the body. However, the right ratio to omega-3 fatty acids is crucial to control inflammation and promote long-term health.
