Rocket Yoga is a dynamic, modern yoga style developed in the 1980s by American yoga teacher Larry Schultz in San Francisco. It is rooted in classical Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga but has been adapted and simplified to make it accessible to a wider range of practitioners, regardless of experience level or body type. The name “Rocket” reflects the idea that this practice propels students forward in their yoga journey faster than more traditional approaches.
Larry Schultz originally created Rocket Yoga for the members of the rock band Grateful Dead, aiming to keep their bodies strong and flexible during demanding tours. This unconventional origin helps explain the free-spirited philosophy of the style: less rigidity, more joy, and greater room for individual adaptation. Over the decades, Rocket Yoga has gained international popularity and is now taught in studios worldwide.
Rocket Yoga is organized into three main sequences, commonly referred to as Rocket I, Rocket II, and Rocket III:

Those new to yoga are encouraged to gain some basic experience first or to attend an introductory class. Individuals with existing injuries, particularly to the spine, knees, or shoulders, should consult a physician or physical therapist before beginning the practice.
Rocket Yoga stands out from other yoga styles in several key ways:
