What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a non-invasive physical treatment method that uses red or near-infrared light with wavelengths between approximately 620 and 850 nanometers. The light penetrates beneath the skin surface and generates both thermal and photobiological effects that can support various healing processes. It is used in clinical settings as well as for home use with personal devices.

Mechanism of Action

Red and near-infrared light is absorbed by the mitochondria – the energy-producing organelles within cells. This activates the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase, which increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy carrier of cells. Additional effects of red light therapy include:

  • Improved blood circulation in the treated area
  • Release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels
  • Reduction of inflammatory mediators
  • Activation of growth factors that support tissue regeneration

Areas of Application

Red light therapy is used for a wide range of conditions and complaints:

Pain and Musculoskeletal Conditions

  • Muscle pain and tension
  • Back pain and neck pain
  • Joint pain related to osteoarthritis or arthritis
  • Sports injuries and delayed onset muscle soreness

Application and Dosage

Red light therapy is delivered using specialized red light lamps or LED panels. The distance to the light source, duration of treatment, and wavelength of the light are crucial factors for effectiveness. Typical treatment parameters include:

  • Session duration: 10 to 20 minutes
  • Frequency: daily or several times per week
  • Distance from the lamp: 20 to 50 cm depending on the device
  • Wavelengths: 630–670 nm (red light) and 800–850 nm (near-infrared light)

Eye protection should always be worn during treatment, as intense light exposure can damage the retina.

Safety and Side Effects

Red light therapy is considered safe and well-tolerated when used correctly. Rare reactions may include:

  • Mild skin redness or warmth directly after treatment
  • Headaches from excessive or prolonged exposure
  • Overheating if the device is held too close to the skin

Red light therapy is contraindicated in the following situations:

  • Active malignant tumors in the treatment area
  • Photosensitive skin or use of photosensitizing medications
  • Pregnancy (over the abdominal area)
  • Acute inflammatory conditions with fever

Scientific Evidence

Numerous clinical studies support the effectiveness of red light therapy for musculoskeletal complaints, wound healing, and skin rejuvenation. Research into photobiomodulation (PBM) – the scientific term for this therapeutic approach – has grown significantly in recent years. However, for some indications, further large-scale studies are still needed to standardize optimal treatment parameters.
