Sanddorn ist eine orangefarbene Beere des Sanddornstrauchs, die wegen ihres hohen Gehalts an bioaktiven Pflanzenstoffen als Lebensmittel und Naturprodukt genutzt wird.
Sanddorn wächst vor allem in küstennahen und sandigen Regionen Europas und Asiens und ist für seine außergewöhnliche Nährstoffdichte bekannt. Die Beeren zeichnen sich durch einen säuerlich-herben Geschmack aus und enthalten unter anderem Vitamin C, Carotinoide, Vitamin E sowie sekundäre Pflanzenstoffe. Aufgrund dieser Zusammensetzung wird Sanddorn häufig im Zusammenhang mit Ernährung, Immunsystem und Zellschutz genannt.
In der Praxis wird Sanddorn in vielfältiger Form verwendet. Typische Produkte sind Sanddornsaft, -mark, -sirup, -pulver oder -öl. Diese finden Einsatz in Lebensmitteln wie Säften, Tees, Marmeladen und Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln. Auch in der Kosmetik wird Sanddornöl aufgrund seiner fettlöslichen Pflanzenstoffe in Cremes, Salben und Hautpflegeprodukten eingesetzt.
Ernährungsphysiologisch wird Sanddorn vor allem wegen seiner Kombination aus wasser- und fettlöslichen Pflanzenstoffen geschätzt. Besonders das aus den Beeren und Samen gewonnene Sanddornöl unterscheidet sich von vielen anderen Pflanzenölen durch seinen Gehalt an Fettsäuren und antioxidativ wirksamen Begleitstoffen. Aufgrund des intensiven Geschmacks und der hohen Konzentration an Inhaltsstoffen wird Sanddorn häufig verarbeitet oder verdünnt konsumiert und selten roh verzehrt.
