The term Siebenschläfer (pronounced "zee-ben-shlay-fer") has three distinct meanings in German culture: a traditional weather proverb tied to June 27, a small hibernating rodent (Glis glis), and an ancient Christian legend about seven sleeping saints. The name literally translates to "seven sleepers."
The Weather Rule (Bauernregel)
In German folklore, June 27 is known as Siebenschläfertag – the Day of the Seven Sleepers. The traditional saying holds that whatever weather occurs on this day will persist for the following seven weeks, effectively shaping the rest of summer through August.
Is There Any Scientific Basis?
Meteorologists at the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst, DWD) have examined this rule and found that it holds true in roughly 60% of years. The reason lies in large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns: around late June, persistent high-pressure or low-pressure systems can become established over Central Europe, maintaining stable weather conditions for several weeks.

The Animal: Edible Dormouse (Glis glis)
The Siebenschläfer is also a rodent belonging to the dormouse family (Gliridae). It is one of the longest-hibernating mammals in Europe, sleeping from October to May – up to seven months – which is the origin of its German name.
