A nursing pillow is a specially shaped support cushion designed to help breastfeeding mothers and their babies maintain a comfortable and ergonomically correct position during feeding. It is placed around the waist and hip area of the mother, raising the baby to an optimal height at the breast. Nursing pillows come in various shapes, including crescent-shaped, C-shaped, and elongated designs.
Nursing pillows serve several important purposes during breastfeeding:
A nursing pillow can be used in various breastfeeding positions:
The pillow is wrapped around the waist, and the baby is placed on it in a side-lying position facing the breast. This is the most common breastfeeding position and is significantly easier with the support of a nursing pillow.
The baby is positioned under the arm of the mother, with the nursing pillow providing support underneath. This position is particularly suitable after a cesarean section or for mothers with larger breasts.
The nursing pillow can be used as a support for both mother and baby while lying down, enabling relaxed nighttime breastfeeding.
When choosing a nursing pillow, the following factors should be considered:
From a medical perspective, a nursing pillow can help prevent common breastfeeding problems. An ergonomically correct breastfeeding position reduces the risk of mastitis (breast inflammation), blocked milk ducts, and sore nipples. Midwives and lactation consultants frequently recommend nursing pillows, especially during the first weeks after birth when mother and baby are still learning breastfeeding techniques. After a cesarean delivery, the pillow can also reduce pressure on the surgical incision by keeping the weight of the baby away from the abdominal area.
A nursing pillow should never be used as a sole sleeping surface for the baby, as it may increase the risk of suffocation. In line with guidelines for the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), no loose pillows or cushions should be placed in the sleeping area of the infant. The pillow is intended exclusively for supervised use during breastfeeding and supported positioning.
