Streptococcus is a widespread genus of Gram-positive bacteria that occurs naturally on the skin, mucous membranes and in the mouth and throat of many people. Some Streptococcus species are part of the normal microbiota and have protective functions, while other types are potentially pathogenic. The genus includes a large number of species with very different characteristics.

Other species such as Streptococcus salivarius or Streptococcus mitis are part of a healthy oral flora and help to protect against pathogenic microorganisms. The balance of the Streptococcus population in the body is crucial for health. Overgrowth of pathogenic streptococci or invasion of normally sterile areas of the body can lead to severe infections. Conversely, certain non-pathogenic Streptococcus species can strengthen the immune defence and even have antimicrobial effects through their metabolic products.
