Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum.
If untreated, it progresses through several stages and can become chronic over many years. Early signs are often overlooked, which contributes to the global resurgence of cases.
In the primary stage, a painless ulcer (chancre) develops at the site of infection, usually in the genital area. The secondary stage is characterized by skin rashes, mucosal lesions, and flu-like symptoms. If left untreated, the tertiary stage can cause severe damage to the heart, nervous system, and organs, potentially leading to neurosyphilis.
Diagnosis is made through serological blood tests, and treatment typically involves penicillin therapy, which is highly effective. Alongside medical treatment, preventive measures such as safer sex practices, regular screenings, and early testing after risk exposure are crucial in reducing transmission.
