What is UC2?
UC2 (also written as UC-II) is a patented extract of native undenatured type II collagen sourced from chicken cartilage. Unlike conventional hydrolyzed collagen supplements, UC2 preserves the natural three-dimensional structure of the collagen molecule. This structural integrity is essential to its unique mechanism of action.
Mechanism of Action
UC2 works through an immunological process known as oral tolerance. When taken orally, the intact collagen travels to the small intestine, where it interacts with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT).
- Specialized immune cells in the gut lining, called regulatory T-cells, recognize the native collagen structure.
- These T-cells then migrate to the joints, where they suppress the overactive immune response responsible for cartilage degradation.
- The result is a reduction in joint inflammation and improved protection of articular cartilage.
This mechanism sets UC2 apart from other collagen products, which primarily aim to provide structural building blocks for cartilage tissue.
Areas of Application
UC2 is primarily used in dietary supplements targeting joint health and mobility. Common applications include:
- Osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease): Reducing pain and improving joint function.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: Modulating the immune response directed against joint cartilage.

Dosage
Clinical studies have typically used a dose of 40 mg of UC2 per day. This comparatively low dose is characteristic of the ingredient, as its effects are immune-mediated rather than structural. Higher doses do not necessarily improve efficacy. UC2 is ideally taken on an empty stomach to optimize the oral tolerance mechanism.

Several clinical studies have examined the effectiveness of UC2 in joint-related conditions:
- A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial demonstrated that UC2 significantly reduced knee pain and improved joint function in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
- Comparative studies suggested that UC2 may be more effective than a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin in relieving joint symptoms.
- Improvements in joint comfort and mobility were also observed in healthy, physically active individuals.
The overall quality of existing studies is solid, although additional large-scale, long-term trials would further strengthen the evidence base.
Safety and Tolerability
UC2 is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. No serious adverse effects have been reported in clinical trials. However, the following considerations apply:
- Individuals with a chicken or egg allergy should avoid UC2 due to its origin from chicken cartilage.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional before use.
- Theoretical interactions with immunosuppressive medications exist and should be discussed with a doctor.
