Although they resemble microalgae in appearance, thraustochytrids are phylogenetically classified within the Stramenopiles, making them more closely related to brown algae and water moulds than to true algae or fungi. Ulkenia species occur naturally in marine sediments, mangrove forests, and coastal waters.

Ulkenia sp. synthesises DHA via a specialised polyketide synthase-like (PKS-like) metabolic pathway, which differs from classical fatty acid synthesis. This pathway enables efficient and direct production of DHA without the stepwise elongation and desaturation of fatty acid chains typical of other organisms. The fatty acids are stored in lipid droplets within the cell and can be extracted at scale through fermentation processes.

DHA derived from Ulkenia sp. is used in several areas:
