PHGG (partially hydrolyzed guar gum) is a soluble dietary fiber obtained from guar gum through a special hydrolysis process. During this process, the components of guar gum are broken down into smaller, water-soluble parts. The result is a fine, tasteless, and colorless powder that dissolves effortlessly in liquids. It draws a large amount of water from the body, which can cause bloating in sensitive individuals. PHGG, on the other hand, is obtained from guar gum through partial hydrolysis and therefore behaves quite differently. It dissolves clearly and easily in water, does not form a gel, and is tasteless and odorless. In addition, it is fermented more slowly in the colon, which may result in reduced gas formation.
What happens to PHGG in the gut?
PHGG reaches the colon largely undigested, where it is fermented by the beneficial gut bacteria present there. During this fermentation process, short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate are produced, which are naturally occurring substances in the gut.
