“…and then you get into the ice-cold water.“ – Why do people voluntarily do this to themselves? And what does it do to your body and mind? In this episode, we – literally – dive into the world of ice bathing!

„Cold applications promote thermoregulation and can increase stress resilience. In addition, ice bathing activates the sympathetic nervous system and significantly increases the release of dopamine,"" explains Matthias Baum from the HEALTH NERDS science team. He describes what happens in the body at the moment of immersion in the ice-cold water: The blood vessels contract abruptly, the blood from the arms and legs is diverted to the inside of the body, protecting the organs from the cold. At the same time, the body activates brown adipose tissue, which converts energy, sugar and fat into heat.

We take an in-depth look at different types of application, such as whole-body, face and neck bathing, palm cooling (hand-washing) and the combination of heat and cold in the form of traditional Kneipp alternating baths. We also shed light on the science behind the Wim Hof method:
