The gut-associated immune system (also known as GALT, for “gut-associated lymphoid tissue”) is an important part of our immune system that protects the gut from pathogens and coordinates an immune response.
It includes specialized structures such as Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes that recognize and fight antigens. At the same time, it increases tolerance to harmless substances such as food and beneficial intestinal bacteria:
