On the main episode: The gut-associated immune system is an important part of our immune system that protects the gut from pathogens and coordinates an immune response. It includes specialized structures such as Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes that recognize and fight antigens. At the same time, it increases tolerance to harmless substances such as food and beneficial intestinal bacteria: “Put simply, this part of our immune system decides whether the things that end up in our digestive tract are friend or foe.” – Matthias Baum from the HEALTH NERDS science team provides amazing insights into our immune system and explains how we can actively and consciously influence it: “Our gut-associated immune system is a lifelong learner.
