The liver is one of the most fascinating organs of the human body. It works tirelessly to control the metabolism, process nutrients and render harmful substances harmless. Its diverse tasks make it a true all-rounder that does far more than just detoxify. It is also regarded in naturopathy as an organ of transformation - both on a physical and emotional level.
The liver as a metabolic center
Weighing around 1.5 kilograms, the liver is the largest internal organ in humans. It regulates the carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, stores essential nutrients such as glycogen, iron and the fatty vitamins A, D and B12. It also plays a central role in the synthesis of proteins, including important coagulation factors. Particularly important is the production of bile, which not only enables the digestion of fat, but also excretes fatty toxins.
Anatomically speaking, the liver consists of tiny functional units, the hepatic lobules, in which the exchange of substances between the blood and liver cells takes place. It receives its blood from two sources: the portal vein, which transports nutrient-rich blood from the digestive tract, and the hepatic artery, which supplies oxygen-rich blood. Nutrients and toxins are processed in the so-called sinusoids, small capillary systems, before the purified blood is returned to the systemic circulation via the central vein.
The detoxification performance of the liver in three phases
Detoxification in the liver is a highly complex process that takes place in three phases:
- Biotransformation (phase I)
In this phase, fatty substances such as environmental toxins, drugs or alcohol are chemically transformed with the help of cytochrome P450 enzymes. However, this often produces aggressive intermediate products, so-called reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage the liver cells. An adequate supply of antioxidants such as vitamin C, E and plant-based protective substances such as silymarin from milk thistle is essential to intercept these by-products. Conjugation and neutralization (phase II) - Excretion (phase III)
It is only through effective excretion that detoxification is completed. The water-soluble products formed in phase II are removed from the body via the stool, urine and sweat. Healthy digestion, adequate hydration and exercise are crucial to support this process. - Mary thistle with its active ingredient silymarin has been shown to have protective and regenerative effects on liver cells.
- Artichoke extract contains cynarin, which promotes bile production and supports digestion.
- Löwenzah extract stimulates the flow of bile thanks to its bitter substances. Cholin is essential for the liver's fat metabolism and can prevent a fatty liver.
- B vitamins (especially B6, B12 and folic acid) support the methylation processes in detoxification phase II.
- Sulphur-containing compounds from garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables promote sulphation and the production of glutathione, one of the liver's most important antioxidant protective substances.
In this phase, the toxic by-products created in phase I are processed further by coupling them to specific molecules. This is done by glucuronidation, sulphation or methylation, which makes the substances water-soluble and therefore excretable. Important nutrients in this phase are sulphur-containing compounds such as those from garlic and broccoli as well as amino acids and methyl donors such as folic acid and vitamin B12.
Detox myths – Why the liver doesn't need radical cures
The term “detox” is ubiquitous and suggests that the body needs regular external cleansing. In reality, the liver is designed to neutralize harmful substances day after day. However, short-term detoxification cures, radical fasting methods or extreme diets can do more harm than good. They release stored fat reserves, which contain lipophilic toxins. If the liver is not sufficiently supplied with important micronutrients during this time, it cannot process and excrete these toxins efficiently.
Sustainable liver support does not require drastic measures, but a continuous supply of essential co-factors such as B vitamins, antioxidants and secondary plant substances.
Natural liver support through a targeted diet
A balanced diet is the key to a healthy liver. In addition to a wholesome diet, certain micronutrients and plant substances play a special role:
The liver as a mirror of the psyche
In naturopathy, the liver is not only regarded as a metabolic organ, but also as an organ of change and transformation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) describes it as the center of energy flow (Qi) and closely linked to emotions such as anger, frustration and stagnation. An overtaxed or stressed liver can manifest itself not only through physical symptoms such as fatigue or digestive problems, but also through emotional imbalances.
Modern research confirms this connection: the liver is involved in the regulation of hormone and immune functions and influences stress processing. Chronic stress can lead to impaired liver function via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis), which in turn promotes chronic inflammation and metabolic problems.
Interpreting liver values correctly
In order to assess liver health, it is not enough to just look at classic laboratory values such as GPT (ALT) and GOT (AST). Additional parameters such as bilirubin, cholinesterase (CHE), alkaline phosphatase (AP) or glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) provide further information about metabolic disorders and stress on the liver.
Conclusion: Strengthening the liver holistically
The liver is a true marvel of the body and deserves constant attention. A conscious diet, sufficient exercise, stress reduction and an optimal supply of essential nutrients are the most sustainable way to maintain its function in the long term. Taking care of your liver not only supports your own metabolism, but also your emotional and mental well-being.
