Influences such as constant stress, obesity, hormonal contraceptives, xenohormones from plastic or even phytohormones from food can severely disrupt the balance of female hormones. If this balance is upset, it can happen that one hormone is produced too much or another too little, for example in the form of so-called Östrogen dominance. You can find out how this occurs and what you can do to counteract the symptoms in this article.
The role of female sex hormones
The Östrogens are the female sex hormones that are produced in the ovaries, the adrenal cortex and also in the placenta. They are divided into Östron, Östriol and Östradiol.
Östradiol is also known as the fertility hormone. It supports the maturation of the egg in the first half of the cycle. Östrogens play a role in the production of serotonin and inhibit bone resorption. They also increase the concentration of HDL cholesterol and offer protection against cardiovascular diseases. Östrogens are involved in the development of the uterine mucosa and influence the growth of breast tissue. They can therefore promote water retention in the body and contribute to tension in the breasts.
In the case of androgen dominance, however, the hormone balance is disrupted, so that the ratio of the hormones androgen and progesterone is disturbed.
How do estrogen and progesterone work in the body?
If the Östrogen level dominates over the progesterone level in women, this is referred to as Östrogen dominance. This hormonal imbalance often occurs in the phases of transition, i.e. during puberty, pregnancy and the menopause.
In the case of Östrogen dominance, the percentage of both hormones shifts, so that the andstrong>Östrogen predominates in the body and the hormone level is out of balance.
The antagonist progesterone and its effect
A Östrogen dominance is associated with an imbalance in relation to the progesterone level. As a rule, progesterone dominates in the second half of the female menstrual cycle. Progesterone is produced in the so-called jelly body, which is formed from the egg follicle after ovulation. If fertilization does not take place, progesterone production decreases and the corpus luteum is reduced. Progesterone has the task of preparing the uterine lining for a pregnancy (fertilization of the egg). A regulated progesterone level is important – because the hormone has an antidepressant effect, influences the immune system and normalizes androgens. The term androgens refers to hormones that promote the development and expression of male sexual characteristics. In men they are predominantly formed in the testicles, in women in the ovaries, the adrenal cortex and in fatty tissue. Progesterone also has a positive effect on libido, the thyroid hormones and supports water excretion in the body. Even the smallest deviations in the hormone balance can therefore lead to cyclical disturbances, as well as an overload of water.have a negative influence on fertility and the shield glands.
The control hormones and their tasks – a sensitive balance
Our hormone glands are in constant exchange with each other to ensure the variety of daily demands on the body. These include sleeping, waking, blood pressure, electrolyte and stress regulation as well as libido. Every hormone release follows the pattern: stimulus; release; reaction. The hormone level is continuously read and measured by corresponding receptors. If a hormone is present in insufficient quantities, the two regulatory centers hypothalamus and pituitary gland send out targeted control hormones. These have the task of either stimulating or inhibiting the hormone glands. As soon as the required hormone concentration is reached, the release of the control hormones and thus also the activity of the relevant hormone glands is reduced via the control centers. For example, the hypothalamic hormone GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) increases the release of LH (luteinizing hormone) in the pituitary gland, which in turn stimulates the release of testosterone in the adrenal cortex, ovary or testicles. As part of a feedback loop, LH inhibits GnRH – and testosterone inhibits LH secretion.
.Östrogendominanz – Ursache für PMS, Endometriose-oder-stimmungenstiefs?
The following symptoms or complaints can arise due to a hormonal imbalance:
- Prämenstrual syndrome, or PMS for short: such as irritability and breast tenderness
- Water retention, e.g. legs, hands, feet, face
- weight gain
- mood swings and depression
- painful periods
- long periods
- Headaches
- Unable to conceive
- Dizziness
- Concentration problems
- Libido loss
- Dry skin and mucous membranesauml;ute
- Increased menopausal symptoms
- Sleep disturbances
- Hot flashes
- Weight gain
- Myomas
- Endometriosis
If you have signs of Östrogen dominance or menstrual irregularities, you should consult a doctor.
Causes of a Östrogendominanz
A Östrogen dominance occurs primarily during puberty, pregnancy and the menopause. Even in the period after stopping the contraceptive pill or other hormonal contraceptives, a disruption in the hormone balance can occur. An imbalance can also be caused by the following causes of an increased estrogen level:
Diagnosis of Östrogendominance
The symptoms and complaints of androgen dominance can easily be confused with the signs of thyroid disease. It is therefore important that both thyroid hormones and Östrogen and progesterone levels are determined. The androgen level should be measured in relation to the progesterone. This is the only way to determine whether Östrogen dominance is present. As a rule, the hormones are determined using a saliva or blood sample.
Östrogendominanz: Das Verhältnis ist entscheidend
In the case of Östrogen dominance, there is either an excessively high Östradiol level with unabundant Östradiol.progesterone levels or an insufficient Östradiol level with too low progesterone levels. In relative Östrogen dominance, the Östradiol dominates, although both values are still within the reference range.
.An optimal Östradiol-progesterone ratio is between 1:80 (first half of the cycle) and 1:200 (second half of the cycle) in women and around 1:30 in men. The Östradiol-testosterone ratio should be in the range of 1:≥ 6 to 1:≥ 10 in women and 1:≥ 50 in men (at least 1:≥ 30 in men from around the age of 55).
Bringing hormones back into balance
Once the findings have been collected, you can discuss with your therapist whether and how existing stresses – among other things through contraceptives (hormonal contraceptives), permanent stress, or malnutrition and malnutrition – can be reduced. Emotional traumas, challenges at work or in the family can be made conscious and counteracted in a targeted way. If your body lacks vitamins and minerals, these can be adjusted;can be supplied via an adapted diet or appropriate supplements. If thyroid disease is the cause, support from your doctor is required.
Östrogendominanz durch Ernaehrung-entgegenwirken
These foods help with Östrogen dominance:
- Cruciferous vegetables: These include broccoli, green cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower
- Essential amino acids (plant-based protein sources)
- Healthy omega-3 fatty acids from walnuts, fish or algae
- Fresh fruit such as berries (polyphenols)
- Probiotics: Fermented foods such as sauerkraut or kimchi ensure a healthy intestinal flora and help to excrete excess toxins
Conclusion:
If you respond to your individual metabolic dynamics, you can benefit from detailed hormone diagnostics and lifestyle changes.changes such as food as medicine, targeted stress reduction and exercise in the fresh air.
