health nerds – Der Podcast über artgerechtes Leben
The great spectre of old age: dementia. Around 1.7 million people in Germany are affected by this disease. Many relatives ask themselves: Will the disease affect me too? How can I protect myself from forgetting?
Matthias Baum from the HEALTH NERDS science team explains the neurological processes that take place in the brain during the onset and progression of dementia. He shows us the genetic prerequisites for the disease and what early warning signs we should look out for. And he says very clearly: “40 percent of dementia cases worldwide are not genetic”.
Scientists have identified these risk factors as triggers: low education, high blood pressure, obesity, alcohol consumption, traumatic brain injury, hearing loss, smoking, depression, lack of exercise, social isolation, type 2 diabetes and air pollution.
Is there any prospect of a cure in the foreseeable future? What can those affected do now? And what strategies can help to minimize the risk of developing dementia? Science provides answers to the problem of forgetting.
