Danger from the HMPV virus: what you need to know

In recent weeks, the so-called HMPV virus (human metapneumovirus) has made headlines around the world. The virus has been known for many years, but new developments and variants, such as the HPMV variant (human pathogenic metapneumovirus), are attracting increased attention. But what makes HMPV so dangerous and how can you protect yourself? Find out everything you need to know about the virus in this article.

In this article, you will learn everything you need to know about the virus.

What is the HMPV virus?

The HMPV virus belongs to the metapneumovirus family and is a common pathogen of respiratory diseases. It is similar in structure to other known viruses such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and can cause severe symptoms, particularly in vulnerable groups. However, a new variant, HPMV, shows some mutations that make it more contagious and potentially more dangerous. This variant is currently being investigated in Germany and worldwide. Its spread is reminiscent of the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Symptoms and course of the disease

The symptoms of HMPV infection are similar to those of other respiratory diseases and include

  • Fever
  • Cough and shortness of breath
  • Sore throat
  • Limb pain
  • Exhaustion

In severe cases, pneumonia or even acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can occur. Older people, young children and people with a weakened immune system are particularly at risk. The HPMV variant could also play a role in these cases, but so far the majority of infections are caused by the classic HMPV.

How dangerous is the virus?

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified HMPV as a major respiratory pathogen. Although the death rate currently appears low, the rapid spread of the virus is causing concern. The new HPMV variant could potentially cause more severe cases, but extensive studies are still lacking. The experience with COVID-19 shows that rapid and coordinated research is crucial in order to develop effective therapies.

Protection and prevention

To date, there is no specific vaccine against HMPV or HPMV, but there are some measures to minimize the risk of infection:

  1. Wash your hands frequently: Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly with soap significantly reduces the risk of infection.
  2. Wearing masks: A mask can offer protection, especially on public transport or in crowds.
  3. Avoid close contact: Keep your distance from people who show symptoms of illness.
  4. Strengthening the immune system: A balanced diet, sufficient sleep and regular exercise can help to strengthen your immune system.

In addition, there are current research projects looking at the effect of lactoferrin on viruses, including COVID-19. Lactoferrin, a protein with antiviral properties, could potentially also be effective against HPMV. Studies to date have shown promising results, but further research is needed (see PMC9676636).

What to do in suspected cases

If you notice symptoms such as fever, coughing or shortness of breath in yourself or your loved ones, you should seek medical advice immediately. Stay at home to avoid endangering others and inform your contacts.

Look into the future

Leading scientists are working flat out to develop a vaccine and specific treatment options. Until these are available, the most important protection against the virus remains the personal responsibility of each individual.

The experience with COVID-19 has shown how important it is to act quickly and work together globally. HMPV presents us with new challenges, but with knowledge, caution and solidarity, together we can contain the spread of the virus. Stay informed and take care of your health!
