What are natural polyphenols and why are they important?
Polyphenols are secondary plant compounds found in fruits, vegetables, herbs, teas, red wine, and certain roots. What distinguishes trans-resveratrol from regular resveratrol?
In chemistry, molecules are often distinguished by their cis- and trans-forms. These configurations describe different spatial arrangements of hydrogen atoms around a double bond. Trans-resveratrol is the nature-identical and more stable form, as the hydrogen atoms are on opposite sides of the bond, providing greater stability. In contrast, conventional cis-resveratrol has both hydrogen atoms on the same side, making it less stable and more sensitive to light and heat. The RESROX® 98 trans-resveratrol used here consists of more than 98% of the active, stable, and effective trans-form.
What makes BMT® resveratrol special?
Through innovative microencapsulation technology, the release of the substance is directed specifically to the small intestine, where nutrient absorption mainly occurs. Resveratrol – What Really Matters
Resveratrol is a plant-based polyphenol commonly used in dietary supplements (supplements) for its antioxidant, cell-protective, and potentially life-extending properties. Chemically, it exists in two forms: trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol. The term "resveratrol" alone is unspecific and includes both isomers. However, high-quality supplements specifically use trans-resveratrol, as this form has shown the highest bioactivity and stability in studies – particularly regarding the activation of sirtuins, mitochondrial function, and cellular protection.
Cis-resveratrol, on the other hand, is significantly less biologically active and less stable. It is usually formed by the conversion of the trans-isomer when exposed to light or heat. In supplement manufacturing, the rule is: the higher the content of pure trans-resveratrol, the more effective and higher-quality the product. Products with an undefined "resveratrol" label often contain mixed forms or inferior raw materials. Therefore, when purchasing, it is important to look for a precise declaration ("min. 98% trans-resveratrol"), ideally from a plant-based source.
