On the main episode: Ice bathing – why do people do it voluntarily? And what does it do to the body and mind? In this episode, we – literally – dive into the world of ice bathing! Cold applications promote thermoregulation and can increase stress resilience. In addition, ice bathing activates the sympathetic nervous system and significantly increases the release of dopamine,"" explains Matthias Baum from the HEALTH NERDS science team. He describes what happens in the body at the moment of immersion in the ice-cold water: The blood vessels contract abruptly, the blood from the arms and legs is diverted to the inside of the body, protecting the organs from the cold. At the same time, the body activates brown adipose tissue, which converts energy, sugar and fat into heat.

We take a detailed look at various types of application, such as whole-body, face and neck baths, palm cooling (hand rubs) and the combination of heat and cold in the form of traditional Kneipp alternating baths.

We also shed light on the science behind the Wim Hof method: are there any contraindications or dangers? Why do many ice bathers report a „rush of happiness“ after the bath? Are there different protocols for women and men? What role do breathing techniques, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide release play?
