6-Sialyllactose sodium salt (abbreviated 6-SL-Na) is the sodium salt-stabilized form of 6-sialyllactose, a naturally occurring human milk oligosaccharide (HMO). HMOs are complex carbohydrate molecules found in great diversity in human breast milk, where they play a central role in early childhood development. The molecule consists of the disaccharide lactose with a sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid) attached via an alpha-2,6-glycosidic bond. The sodium salt form enhances solubility and stability, making it the preferred form for use in foods, infant formulas, and dietary supplements.

6-Sialyllactose sodium salt is increasingly used as an ingredient in infant and follow-on formula to better mimic the composition of human breast milk. The goal is to bring formula-fed infants closer to breastfed infants in terms of gut health and immune development. It is also found in dietary supplements aimed at supporting gut health in adults.

6-Sialyllactose sodium salt is generally considered safe and well tolerated. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated and approved several HMOs, including sialylated oligosaccharides, for use in foods. Adverse effects at recommended doses are rare; at higher doses, mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating or loose stools may occur. Individuals with lactose intolerance should note that the molecule is structurally related to lactose, although it does not behave like free lactose in the body. Individual tolerability testing may nonetheless be advisable.
Uniform official dosage recommendations for 6-sialyllactose sodium salt as a supplement do not yet exist. In clinical studies and approved infant products, amounts in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 g per day are typically used. The optimal dose depends on the intended application, age, and health status of the individual.
